Is it possible to conserve biodiversity and sustain local livelihoods during conflict? Experiences from Myanmar
The Gulf of Mottama project (GoMP) was conceived and begun during a time that Myanmar was opening to new developments and issues such as nature conservation were being given serious government attention. The project flourished; a large area of the Gulf was designated as a Ramsar wetland of international importance; major gains were made in curbing illegal fishing, in diversifying livelihoods and in developing policy mechanisms for participatory coastal resource management. Then came the Covid pandemic, the military coup and increased conflict - requiring the project to address humanitarian needs and adopt a triple nexus perspective. During this brown bag lunch, we will explore project achievements, adaptations, and discuss what remains and will continue after 10 years of SDC support.
For those wishing to read more about the GoMP in advance, please refer to the eight Briefing Papers at the bottom of this link.
