Polish President Karol Nawrocki pays state visit to Switzerland
Bern, 27.05.2026 — Polish President Karol Nawrocki, accompanied by his wife Marta Nawrocka, began a two-day state visit to Switzerland on Wednesday, 27 May. He was received by the Federal Council with military honours in Parliament Square to mark the start of his visit. The delegations then discussed how to further strengthen the already excellent bilateral relations. They also addressed issues relating to economic development and security in Europe.
The Swiss delegation to the official talks included President Guy Parmelin; Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, vice president of the Federal Council and head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA); and Federal Councillor Beat Jans, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).
Both sides stressed the importance of bilateral ties between Switzerland and Poland, in political and economic spheres as well as in terms of scientific, cultural and technical cooperation. Poland’s remarkable economic development over the past three decades has made the country one of the world’s 20 largest economies. Switzerland was able to contribute to this success through close trade and investment ties.
Switzerland’s second contribution supports medium-sized Polish cities in areas such as economic growth and employment, environmental and climate protection as well as health and social services. The excellent relations in the fields of education, research and innovation were also discussed. A bilateral memorandum of understanding was signed in Poznań a year ago to further expand cooperation in these areas.
Regarding European policy issues, the two sides discussed migration-related matters. The Swiss delegation also outlined the next steps for the package of agreements aimed at stabilising and further developing relations between Switzerland and the EU (Bilaterals III). Switzerland supports peace efforts in Europe, among other things, through its current chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Other topics of discussion included the situation in the Middle East and transatlantic relations.
Education, innovation, culture and history on the second day
On the second day of the state visit, Thursday, 28 May, President Parmelin and President Nawrocki will travel together to the canton of Vaud. They will visit institutions representing Switzerland's strengths in education and innovation, as well as sites of historical significance to both Switzerland and Poland.
