Our learnings from two decades of engagement in the building sector
This webinar will explore the role of buildings in climate change mitigation and in strengthening resilience and it will present key findings of SDC's long-standing engagement as well as a concrete project example
As the buildings and construction sector accounts for around one-third of global CO₂ emissions and global building floor area is expected to double by 2050 (UNEP), decarbonising the sector is essential to slowing global warming. At the same time, climate change is increasing buildings’ exposure to natural hazards, including extreme heat, making climate resilience ever more important. Against this backdrop, the webinar will first explore the role of buildings in climate change mitigation and in strengthening (climate) resilience. It will then present the SDC’s long-standing engagement in transforming the sector, along with the key findings from the capitalisation exercise. This will be followed by an in-depth look at the Indo-Swiss Programme on Building Energy Efficiency (BEEP). The session will conclude with an interactive exercise based on a fictional building-sector intervention scenario.
Objectives:
By the end of the webinar, participants will have a clearer understanding of the importance and urgency of transforming the building sector and the dual challenge of reducing emissions while strengthening (climate) resilience. They will be familiar with how the SDC has supported the transformation of the building sector across different regions and will understand key lessons from the capitalisation exercise. These include the importance of regulation and standards, the need to adapt building-sector expertise to local contexts, and the necessity of planning for long-term engagement. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the priorities and trade-offs involved in designing building-sector interventions in development cooperation.
