Learning Journey on Air Pollution, Climate and Health – Session 1

On September 25, 2025, the CDE Network hosted the first session of a two-part learning journey exploring the links between air pollution, climate and health.

Air Pollution in Harbin, China

Event Summary

Air pollution contributes to climate change and causes millions of premature deaths each year. For almost 30 years, the SDC has supported initiatives aimed at tackling air pollution in its partner countries. One recent example is the Climate and Clean Air in Latin American Cities (CALAC+) project, which promotes the use of low-emission urban transport and construction machinery in Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, thereby creating synergies between air pollution control and climate mitigation. Building on this momentum, the CDE Network collaborated with the SDC Regional Hub in Lima to organise a two-part learning journey focusing on air pollution, climate and health.

Following an introduction to SDC's work in Latin America, Marloes Eeftens from the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute provided an overview of the current problems and solutions related to air pollution, as well as the roadblocks hindering current efforts to combat it.

The session continued with a presentation by Amanda Curry from the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in which she introduced the CCAC and its integrated approach to climate and clean air. She also presented AGMx – a one-stop-shop for knowledge and guidance on air quality management. The session concluded with an interactive discussion among participants from the CDE Network.
