Multilateral Engagement

The SDC influences the international Climate and DRR finance, and policy systems at regional and global level, aiming at pro-poor climate and risk governance.

Climate Change

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement defines the objectives as well as commitments and their monitoring in the realm of international climate action. Membership is almost universal.

SDC actively participates in the climate change negotiations, with a focus on loss and damage, a topic at the nexus of climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction and humanitarian aid.

DRR

The SDC is committed to influence the international DRR system, and supports multilateral partners such as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the World Bank's Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR).

Switzerland also regularly hosts the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, where progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR and other regional DRR frameworks is reviewed, and the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) that implements an agenda for the protection of disaster displaced persons.

The SDC also supports the Climate Risk & Early Warning Systems Initiative (CREWS) that strengthens the early warning / early actions capabilities of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This is complemented through targeted partnerships with
MeteoSwiss and WMO (Weather4UN project) and IFRC (climate-smart risk analysis and forecasting).
