Digitalisation

Digitalisation opens countless possibilities and diverse applications in the field of climate, DRR and environment. It can support climate change mitigation and the transition to a carbon neutral, green economy. Earth observation and remote sensing allow the collecting of climate and environmental data for planning, monitoring, and governance purposes and can be used to respond to climate change and other challenges, and to improve warning, prevention, and preparedness. Digitalisation can also help monitor trends in (restored) ecosystems and help to preserve biodiversity and bionatural capacity. It can furthermore support the tracking of sustainable development benefits and scaling-up of Climate, DRR and Environment projects through innovative business models. Thus, Switzerland’s international cooperation strategy 2021-2024 identifies digitalisation as a priority and vital driver of sustainable development

  Reference document: How to digitalise your development cooperation projects and programmes – practical steps for design and planning

  This reference document is an invitation for development cooperation practitioners to explore the potential of digitalisation in their projects and programmes. It aims at helping practitioners to make a first step towards exploring digital innovation across a very broad field of project types. The reference document on digitalisation was developed by the Digital Climate Innovation (DCI, formerly known as the Climate Ledger Initiative CLI) and funded by SDC. The reference document is ideally used in conjunction with the CLI/DCI use case brochure below.

  CLI/DCI use case brochure: Digitalization for Climate Action – Experiences from 8 use cases in 6 countries

  This brochure presents eight use cases that show how digital technologies can enhance climate-related projects in low and lower-middle income countries. It also includes 10 key lessons learned that are based on more than 15 use cases the CLI/DCI supported since 2018.

  13^th CDE Network Event: Digital solutions in Climate, DRR and Environment, December 2023

  The event built on the dialogue initiated with the new network’s first newsletter on Digitalisation in Climate, DRR and Environment. In doing so, the event is part of a continuous effort to enhance digitalisation among actors of Swiss development cooperation such as the 37th AGUASAN Workshop on digitalisation and data management in the water sector. The aims of the event were:

  • Fostering a shared understanding of potential fields of applications of digital technologies in CDE
  • Sharing approaches and concrete positive and negative experiences on the application of digital technologies for a climate and disaster resilient, environmentally sustainable development
  • Asking the right questions when assessing the potential of digitalisation in projects
  • Enabling exchange and networking between Switzerland-based members of the newly constituted CDE network and beyond, connect those interested in the specific topic
